If you finish early you many want to post comments below - are there any heroes who you particularly admire? Are there any who you feel should not be on the list?
Here is another link for heroes, it's BBC so the focus is more British:

HOMEWORK
For your homework, please write 200 - 300 words about your hero / heroine and post it as a comment on the blog. You should say
*Who they are, where they are from etc.
*What they did to achieve heroic status
*Why they are iconic to you personally
I have asked you to put this work on the blog because I think it's interesting for other students to read about your personal hero, and perhaps they will post comments.
This is for next Thursday.
Hi every body, this is my homework, it's very interesting, you should to read it.
It's about Yasser Arafat.
Yasser Arafat
Yasser Arafat was a Palestinian president (1996-2004), He presided over the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1969, and he was a leader of Fatah movement, which is a largest movement in the organization; his real name is Muhammad Abed Elrahman Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini, (August 24, 1929 – November 11, 2004) popularly known as Yasser Arafat. He was born in Jerusalem that is a capital of Palestine, in 4th August 1929. and he had a certificate of engineering, his goal was a liberation of Palestine.
He joined the Egyptian army and fought with Egyptians in 1956. he fought against Israeli forces. Arafat spent much of his life leading Fatah organization, which he founded between 1958–1960, which opposed to Israel's existence in Palestine.
Arafat was constantly surrounded by problems, in the late 1960 and early 1970, when Fatah faced off with Jordan in a civil war.
Arafat and Fatah have been deported from Jordan and Lebanon, and they were the targets of Israel's 1978 and 1982.
In 1994, Arafat received the Nobel Peace Prize, because he always want a peac in the Middel East.
In late 2004 Yasser Arafat was besieged in his house in Ram Allah, by the Israeli Defense Forces. He had been poisoned, he died on 11th November 2004, at the age of 75.
The majority of the Palestinian people and I viewed him as a heroic freedom fighter and martyr. and many Israelis have described him as terrorist.
Saddam Hussein, President of Iraq for the past two decades, has the dubious distinction of being the world's best known and most hated Arab leader. And in a region where despotic rule is the norm, he is more feared by his own people than any other head of state A former Iraqi diplomat living in exile summed up Saddam's rule in one sentence: "Saddam is a dictator who is ready to sacrifice his country, just so long as he can remain on his throne in Baghdad." Few Iraqis would disagree with this. Although none living in Iraq would dare to say so publicly. The Iraqi people are forced to consume a daily diet of triumphalist slogans, fattened by fawning praise of the president. He is portrayed as a valiant knight leading the Arabs into battle against the infidel, or as an eighth-century caliph who founded the city of Baghdad. Evoking the glory of Arab history, Saddam claims to be leading his people to new glory. The reality looks very different. Iraq is bankrupt, its economy and infrastructure shattered by years of economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations following the invasion of Kuwait. Saddam Hussein remains largely isolated from his people, keeping the company of a diminishing circle of trusted advisers - largely drawn from his close family or from the extended clan based around the town of Takrit, north of Baghdad. The Iraqi president was born in a village just outside Takrit in April 1937. In his teenage years, he immersed himself in the anti-British and anti-Western atmosphere of the day. At college in Baghdad he joined the Baath party. After the overthrow of the monarchy in 1958, Saddam connived in a plot to kill the prime minister, Abdel-Karim Qassem. But the conspiracy was discovered, and Saddam fled the country. In 1963, with the Baath party in control in Baghdad, Saddam Hussein returned home and began jostling for a position of influence. During this period he married his cousin Sajida. They later had two sons and three daughters. But within months, the Baath party had been overthrown and he was jailed, remaining there until the party returned to power in a coup in July 1968. Showing ruthless determination that was to become a hallmark of his leadership, Saddam Hussein gained a position on the ruling Revolutionary Command Council. For years he was the power behind the ailing figure of the president, Ahmed Hassan Bakr. In 1979, he achieved his ambition of becoming head of state. The new president started as he intended to go on - putting to death dozens of his rivals. President Saddam Hussein might defend his autocratic style of leadership by arguing that nothing else could have kept such a vast and diverse nation united. And, for all that Saddam Hussein is criticised and reviled, his opponents have not been able to nominate anyone else who might hold Iraq together - with its Kurds in the north, Sunni Muslims in the centre and Shi'ia in the south. What the outside world calls terror, Saddam calls expediency. Some years ago a European interviewer nervously quoted reports that the Baghdad authorities might, on occasions, have tortured and perhaps even killed opponents of the regime. Was this true? Saddam Hussein was not offended. Rather, he seemed surprised by the naivete of the question. "Of course," he replied. "What do you expect if they oppose the regime?" But his tactic of imposing his authority by terror has gone far beyond the occasional arrest and execution of opponents. In attempts to suppress the Kurds, for example, he has systematically used chemical weapons. And in putting down a rebellion of Shi'ia in the south he has razed towns to the ground and drained marshland. Not that you would recognize the figure of a tyrant in the portraits that adorn every building and street corner in Iraq. Here you see Saddam, usually smiling benevolently, in a variety of guises and poses - in military uniform, say, or in traditional ethnic dress, or tweed cap and sports jacket; he might be surrounded by his family or be seen jiggling a young child on his knee - the would-be father-figure of the Iraqi nation.
This is regarding the "piece" about Saddam Hussein .... I have just had another look at it, and I have to tell you Hisham, as if copying and pasting directly from the Internet wasn't bad enough, you chose a webpage which had been written BEFORE Mr Hussein died which means that a lot of the tenses are wrong, ie. there are lots of examples of the present perfect when it should be past simple because the man is dead!
The lesson to be learned from this is that, although using the Internet for research is fine, copying and pasting from the Internet is UNHELPFUL and it's also DANGEROUS! Don't do it!!
Dear Caroline,
First, I like to wish you a very happy Christmas and a prosperous year. Here is my homework on favourite hero.
“Hafez Shirazi”
Hafez is one of the persons who has remained well in Iranians’ minds over centuries. He lived in 8th A. H. century ( 14th A.D century) and is one of the most famous Muslim poets that left a magnificent masterpiece was “Khajeh Shamseddin Mohammad”. He was born in Shiraz which is known as one of the biggest historic cities in Iran. His father was another famous poets in Shiraz that taught Quran to the children and versified poems in his leisure time. Khaje Mohammad was under his father’s teaching and at the early ages he started to learn Quran. He was only 8 when he memorized Quran completely and therefore was given “Hafez” (it means a person who has memorized something) as nickname later on. It was very strange for his father and acquaintances how a child can afford to memorize a huge book like Quran. Mohammad was very intelligent and smart and had a good memory.
When he was young he felt in love with the daughter of a wealthy family in Shiraz named “Shakhe Nabat”. This was one of the loves that social classes never let it happen but it caused Hafez to start writing romantic poems. Hafez always mentioned the existence of God in his poems therefore people believe that his poems are a holly and pure reference to predict their fortune. This belief is so much that people in difficult situations use his book to find the proper fortunate way and forget stresses. His 300 pages poem book has many useful advices.
In my opinion Hafez is one of the admirable persons and I am sure that I am not the only person and so many people admire him. What makes him a hero is his beautiful expressions. His grave is in Shiraz in a big garden and a lot of Iranians feel proud when they visit his grave.
Hello there,
Teachers also do homework ...
The hero I have chosen to write about is a simple person. Her name is Lucy Fensome, she is a British woman but she now lives in the Middle East, where she is the founder and director of an animal sanctuary called "Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land".
Lucy had a good life and a good job in Britain, but more than ten years ago, after a holiday to Israel she was traumatised by the cruelty to horses, mules and donkeys she had seen there. So she gave up everything to move to Israel to start her charity.
Lucy and her team travel out to poor communities in Israel and in Palestine where they offer free medical attention to animals, and advice to their owners. And here lies Lucy's ethos - helping animals and people are two sides of the same coin. The donkeys' owners are often poor and they rely heavily on their animal to make a living, so if that animal is well cared for and gets the water, food, rest and medical attention it needs, then it is motivated to work harder and it will stay fit and healthy for longer, so both the animal and the owner benefit.
In the beginning people thought she was crazy, and probably people still do. But over time she is gradually making a difference. It's not uncommon for men to express deep gratitude and say that her advice has had positive effects.
Lucy misses England but she embraces her life out there. She is married to a kind Palestinian man named Adi, he works with her at the sanctuary, and they have a son. Although she is a mother Lucy still works tirelessly to help animals.
I admire Lucy for taking the brave step of giving everything up in England to go and live in a totally different culture, especially when she knew that the vocation she had chosen would be difficult. Most of all I admire her for acting on what she felt was right.
Here is her website - http://www.safehaven4donkeys.org/
I will write down my hero whose name is Naoko Morioka. When I saw her at television program she was growing up some vegetables, rice and beans in Okinawa which has said to most beautiful place and where a lot of tourists visit from all over the world. She has been famous for Artist, photographer and Writer. All of her works team is living together nature. The team is incidental and people have been thinking it but her simple idea and challenge are made for unusually work and unique life style.
Now I will introduce her background. In 1972 she was born in Shinjuku , which is most crowded and is known to business district. 1994~1999 She exhibited to her picture and batik picture among 25 parts of the country. Motif is Africa and African people these works post cards are well known to. She has two books to credit “Okinawa Simagohnn” and “BEAUTIFUL DAYS in NIRAIKANAI” She lives in Okinawa. When she was visiting Africa, she felt that she was powerless and tested the identification of nature because African children were helping for their mother washing clothes, building a fire and sitting for their sisters or brothers and they did not resist living in nature. Than she came back in Japan she started self-contained life. For example she start to be subsistence farming, gather up fruits nut and berry, life without fridge, cook using for fruit peels, flowers and vegetables, sometimes take a bath in the lake, wash hair using flower shampoo, do washing clothes using salt and charcoal.
She is very thorough about her life. I think it is breathtaking that she is enjoying all of her life style. And all of her belonging is unify with nature and it is so beautiful. I felt she live in nature.
I have been influenced with her life style and opinion because I was making for sculptures have environmental problem’s concept.
Haha```nice teacher``I am think my hero.Little bit difficult. You are very kind.I'll finish tonight.
Hi ,,,,,
Today in my homework I’m going to write about a man, who single handily turned upside down people’s view on racism, and becoming a symbol of freedom.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in 18 July 1918, in small village in the capital city of south Africa. His father was a chief of the town of Mezo where Nelson was born. Mandela was the only member of his family that attend school at age 7 years old, and the name Nelson was actually given at that time, by his teacher who found his real name “Rolihlahla” hard to pronounce.
Mandela has started to protest against the political government in South Africa, which was rolled by the white race. This is due to the government denying the black race to have any authority in the political, economical and social. Even though the black race far greater than the white race on population.
In 1961, Mandela became the leader of the ANC's armed wing, which he co-founded. Mandela tried to an unconventional warfare only if his sabotage of the militry and government had failed.
In 1962 Mandela arrested for 5 years in prison after living on the run for seventeen months. From that year up word Mandela was spending more time in prison than out side. Last time he got arrested he stayed in prison for 27 years, where people protested aginst his arresting and calling for his freedom.
Mandela had the choice to be freed eariler in one condition, to stop his outraging protest against the government, but he rejected the offer and went on to be freed 5 years later by the president of south africa.
Follwing his realse from prison mandela received over hundred awards over four decades one of them was the nobel peace prze.in 1994 he became the first balck president of south Africa.
In the end, even though he retired he is still remembered by every person in the world, for what he did.
P.S actually he isn’t really my hero, but I really respect what he did for his people, even spending all his youth in prison he never give up. He is such a great man and he deserve to be a hero ,,,a legend hero who build a brave history.

Hi
I want to talk about Omar Mukhtar who was the leader of the opposition movement against Italian occupation forces .Which started in 1926, and which resulted to martyrdom him in 1931, and how led to beat the Italian colonization.
Janzour is a small village in Libya where He was born. He studied Arabic and Islam for eight years .Also he had taught before he became combatant.
In October of 1911, Italian battleships arrived at the shores of Libya. Which is marked the beginning of a series battles between the Italian and Libyan hero?
Omar was very intelligent and had knowledge in desert which used to defeat the Italians.
He fought Italian in more than 20 years, and more than thousand battles.
At the end of his struggle he hurt in battle and captured then he sentenced by hanging in a public place and he hung in front of his follower and the camp how is from Italian.
In addition his character was based on the film, which is called (lion of the desert), was directed by Moustapha Alkad.
Finally General Rodo lfo admitted and witnessed the greatness and skill in war and beat the Italian even so he used a simple weapons, and Omar showed the real man in side it when he refused kill captured which was according to Islam, and only fight for their home land and freedom where is necessary to fight and that why I admire him?!
Prophet Mohammed (Peace upon him) is my Hero. He carried one of the greatest messages of God, which is my religion, Islam. He is the last prophets of God, completing the chain of earlier holy religions; Christianity and Jewish. I admire him as a person and as a teacher. The history had documented his amazing personality since childhood and even before his religious mission. He was always a respectable honest person whom people trusted enough to assign him as their money preserver. He had a pleasant personality in which people were most attracted to his kind merciful heart. Moreover, he was a remarkable person enough to impress people through his say, deeds and even his silence. He was a great husband, father, companion and a friend. Furthermore, he cared about his message and spent his life working hard to teach people about Islam, because he believed in Islam teachings. As Islam guaranteed human freedom, dignity and welfare, Prophet Mohammed ended slavery, set Zakat which is an annual compulsory donation to help the poor in the society, set women social and financial rights, cared mostly about setting good family relationships, assuring that the good mother and father are good school for their children. Prophet Mohammed had revealed the secret of good life, which is being grateful and thankful to God by worshiping him faithfully, good person by treating people as you wish to be treated.

Suha
Vasiliy Zaitsev
It was late autumn 1942 when allies lines had been crashed from the German forces and the last city remained was Stalingrad. Germans achieved to fall in the borders of Stalingrad and so Russians started to lose faith for winning. The reason they made Vasiliy Zaitsev famous to their soldiers was to cheer them up.
Vasiliy Zaitsev, was the legendary red army sniper and he was born in the Urals in 1915. He grew up as a farmer and hunter. Zaitsev learned how to use the 1047th rifle regiment of the 284th rifle division in Stalingrad in September, 1942. He had killed 432 enemy soldiers that’s why Soviet press called him a hero. Soviet propaganda made him famous for apparently having a battle fight with a German super sniper, called Major Koenig or Colonel Thorvalds. From the legend, German commanders were so impressed by Zaitsev, that they sent their best sniper to kill him. After all it was the German who was killed by Zaitsev.
Nowadays Vasiliy Zaitsev is still a hero because some people believe that the freedom of Russia owned him. The movie Enemy at the Gates is based on these facts.
